JESSIE'S FAQ PAGE
+ WHO ARE YOU?
My name is Jessie! I live in LA and work in animation. I am a Writer, but have also worked in Production, and Talent Development. I have an awesome husband (who also works in animation) and a dog named Mochi.
+ HOW DID YOU BREAK INTO ANIMATION?
I applied online for internships, and managed to intern at Cartoon Network and DreamWorks. Those internships really were the foundation of my career, I didn't really know anyone before then.
+ WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL?
I don't talk about my art school. I had a bad falling out with them and left early. Leaving without a degree has not harmed my career in the slightest. (Your mileage may vary!) I did have a great time & learned a lot about story at Concept Design Academy in Pasadena, CA. (Those were storyboarding classes & not script writing classes.)
+ HOW DID YOU BECOME A WRITER?
I wanted to be a Storyboard Artist for a long time. I eventually realized I was stronger at writing than storyboarding. Over time, I started to write scripts, read scripts, and learn from others. This has been a LONG process full of rejection & silence - and occasionally a little success. I still have a long way to go, but I love it and I'm learning with every draft. Additionally, all of my opportunities have come from friends, networking with other writers/production people/executives in animation. These are connections I've nurtured over the last decade. A writing career can be a long process!
+ WHAT ARE YOUR CREDITS?
+ WHAT WRITING PROGRAMS DO YOU USE?
I like Writer Duet, Final Draft & any text doc I can access online or via my phone.
+ HOW DO I BECOME A WRITER?
Write. Write some more. Read scripts. Write. Make friends. Send people scripts, if they are open to accepting scripts. Everyone has a different path - which is great news because that means you are in control of your own story!
+ HOW DO I BECOME A WRITER IF I DON'T LIVE IN LA?
I get this question a lot, and I really don't know the answer. If you are not physically in LA, you need to find a way to develop connections. Twitter & other social media can be a great way of doing this! I have always lived in Southern California, so unfortunately I'm not the best person to ask.
+ WHAT IS "TALENT DEVELOPMENT"?
I am currently (as of May 2019) working as "Talent Development" at Cartoon Network Studios. This means my day job is to help with artistic recruitment at the studio, as well as nurture the existing talent with cultural development (gallery shows, classes, monthly speakers etc). I also helped develop CNS Academy (the storyboard training program). It's a great day job! I prefer to keep it seperate from my writing career, which is why I prefer to NOT have folks email me about it via the email on my website. There are appropriate ways to apply to CNS below.
+ HOW DO I APPLY FOR A JOB AT CARTOON NETWORK?
Please do not reach out to my personal email about recruitment, thank you.
+ HOW IS IT WORKING AT CARTOON NETWORK?
It's great! I have enjoyed working at many animation studios. I don't really have too much more to add to that though - every show, department & studio can be a very different experience for every individual.
+ HOW DO I BECOME A CHARACTER DESIGNER/BOARD ARTIST/OTHER ARTISTIC JOB IN ANIMATION?
Create. Draw a lot. Study from life. Draw things that make you excited! Make a portfolio. Show people your work. Look at the portfolios of people you admire. (Find people to admire on twitter, instagram, social media!) Learn how to curate your work so people know exactly what you want to do & so you know you are sharing your absolute best work. Create & draw some more. Please also remember to sleep, drink water, eat considerably healthy, and take walks.
+ CAN YOU REVIEW MY PORTFOLIO?
Unfortunately, no. At the moment I only review portfolios at schools, for specific recruiting events, and for the interns at my studio.
+ CAN YOU READ MY SCRIPT?
Not at this time.
+ CAN YOU HELP ME GET A PRODUCTION/CORPORATE JOB?
At my day job I do not help with the hiring of corporate/production positions.
+ CAN WE GET COFFEE?
Maybe! I am pretty busy lately. You can ask, but please don't be offended if it's not possible.
+ WHY IS YOUR NICKNAME "JESSIE VELOCIRAPTOR"?
Because I'm a dinosaur.
+ WHAT IF I HAVE OTHER GENERAL QUESTIONS ABOUT WRITING/ANIMATION?
Please feel free to email me! I will do my best to reply.
